The recent activism of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has shown good signs in the fight against corruption in Nepal. 26 cases in the month of Jestha alone, 6 cases in a single day, and major cases filed with former Prime Ministers and MPs as defendants have sent a message of zero tolerance towards corruption.
The dispute over constitutional appointments and the appointment of 52 office bearers pending in the Supreme Court have raised serious questions. The writ petitioners' argument that the appointments made by adapting the provisions of the Constitutional Council through an ordinance to suit themselves have attacked the essence of the constitution is relevant. Such appointments made by bypassing parliamentary hearings and based on the rules of dissolution of parliament undermine democratic values and good governance. The upcoming verdict of the Supreme Court will guide the legitimacy of such processes and the future.
In this situation, it is imperative to remain free from political pressure to maintain the activism shown by the authority. Be it the ruling party or the opposition, no one should be above the law. Only by having the courage to bring all former Prime Ministers, MPs or high-ranking officials to justice equally can the foundation of good governance be strengthened. Also, there should be no delay in making the appointment process of constitutional bodies transparent, independent and in accordance with the constitution. If we are to dream of good governance, there should be no compromise in this fight against corruption.
Only by continuing this momentum of authority, stopping political interference and strengthening the constitutional process can Nepal truly embark on the path of good governance. The responsibility of turning this auspicious sign into perfection now lies on the shoulders of all of us.
