History of Janaki Temple (Janakpur, Nepal)

This is an example of Hindu-Koiri Nepali architecture. It is often considered the most important model of Koiri architecture in Nepal. The fully built shiny white and mixed style of Mughal and Koiri domes are spread over an area of 4,860 square feet. It is a three-storied structure made entirely of stone and marble.

All its 60 rooms are decorated with Nepal flags, stained glass, engraving, and paintings, with beautiful lattice windows and bastions. According to legend and epic, King Janaka ruled the region during the Ramayana period. His daughter Janaki (Sita) had chosen Lord Rama as her husband during her swayamvar, and became the queen of Ayodhya. Their wedding ceremony took place in a nearby temple, also known as the Vivah Mandap.

The temple was built in about 9,09,000 ( Nine lakh, Nine thousand). Hence this temple is popularly called Naulakha Temple. Queen Trishan Bhanu, the queen of Tikamgarh constructed this temple in 1910 AD. Was built-in.

In 1657, a golden statue of Goddess Sita was found at one place, and Sita is said to have lived there. Legend has it that it was built at the holy site where the ascetic Shurkishordas found images of Goddess Sita. The Shurkishordas were the founders of modern Janakpur and great saints and poets who preached about the philosophy of Sita Upasana (also known as Sita Upanishad). Legend has claimed that King Janaka (Sirdhvaja) worshiped Shiva-Dhanush at this place.

Every year, thousands of pilgrims from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka and other countries visit the Ram Janaki temple to worship Lord Ram and Sita. Many devotees visit the temple during festivals like Ram Navami, Vivah Panchami, Dussehra, and Tihar.

The site was designated as a UNESCO tentative site in 2008.
